Concept
IVAC hardware and AI algorithm technology demonstrated in small scale turbine at NTNU Hydroelectric Laboratory
Norwegian University of Science and Technology
NTNU is the leading water research facility in Norway. The Hydroelectric Laboratory has a unique closed-loop system for testing of hydropower turbines. Weis has been granted access to the lab for testing of the system.
NTNU waterturbine
NTNU Hydroelectric Laboratory operates a highly optimised 1:5 scale turbine. This turbine is one of the most efficient turbines in the world.
Initial Prototype
The initial prototype was developed to work with the NTNU Francis turbine and was used to test the viability of the technology.
Results from testing
After 3 weeks of testing, the results were in. The prototype was able to increase the efficiency of the turbine in all scenarios.
Report from NTNU based on testing
The test results is confirmed by independent scientists at NTNU.

Sustainability
By increasing the efficiency and performance of hydroelectric turbines IVAC will contribute to several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), emphasising environmental sustainability, clean energy, economic growth, and climate action. The specific SDGs impacted include:
Affordable and Clean Energy
By enhancing the efficiency of hydroelectric turbines, the product directly aligns with Goal 7, which aims to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all.
Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure
The product supports Goal 9 by promoting innovation in the infrastructure sector. Increased efficiency in hydroelectricity production contributes to sustainable industrialisation and infrastructure development.
Climate Action
Improving the efficiency of hydroelectric turbines helps reduce the carbon footprint of energy production, contributing to efforts to combat climate change and its impacts.
Life Below Water
Hydroelectric power is considered a renewable energy source that minimises the environmental impact associated with traditional fossil fuel-based energy. This contributes indirectly to Goal 14 by promoting the responsible use of resources and minimising water-related environmental impacts.
Life on Land
By providing a cleaner alternative to energy production, the product indirectly supports Goal 15 by reducing the environmental degradation associated with traditional energy sources and their impact on terrestrial ecosystems.
Partnerships for the Goals
Collaboration between technology providers, hydroelectric plant operators, and relevant stakeholders is essential for the successful implementation of products that enhance hydroelectric efficiency. This aligns with Goal 17, which emphasises the importance of partnerships for achieving sustainable development.
Team
Weis has a team of highly qualified and experienced staff, with the track record needed to commercialise and take to market the IVAC innovation
